Church lectern Description
In the Orthodox Church, the lectern is usually the stand on which the Bible or service books rest and from which the reading from Scripture are read during the service. The lectern is normally set in front of the believers. If the Holy Bible is read by a Bishop, Priest or Deacon, the clergyman with lectern faces the congregation. If the lectern is used by a low-rank clergyman or singers, the lectern faces the altar. Round lecterns are commonly used at kliros by the singers.
Lecterns are often made of wood, and sometimes of brass. They may be either fixed in place or portable. A lectern differs from a pulpit, the latter being used for sermons. Churches that have both a lectern and a pulpit will often have them on opposite sides of the sanctuary, the lectern to the north and the pulpit to the south. Sometimes, the lectern will be placed in the center of the quire or the nave. The lectern will often be smaller than the pulpit, and both may be adorned with antipendia in the color of the liturgical season.
Aequitas Church Supplies offers excellent hand-made lecterns of various sizes richly decorated with carving. We welcome custom-orders and lecterns with custom-sizes.
